Frazier stadium and Sienna Hall’s advancement. There will now be monthly updates to students to keep them informed on the construction.
Currently, the stadium development is slow because of all the October rain. The field is also the lowest spot on campus and therefore has a lot of standing water that will not dry up in these cold months. So far, the footers and piers are being poured for the bleachers, foundations and pole stubs are in place for the stadium lights, and the rock base has been started for the track. Also, there has been progress on the hillside by Our Lady of the Woods Chapel and the curbing along Newburg Road has started and the sidewalk will following shortly. The completion of the stadium is being looked on with the hopeful eyes of the lacrosse team, who have scheduled the second half of their season at home in order to play on their new home field. Whether or not the stadium, which broke ground last April, will be done yet or not is another story.
Rain was not such an obstacle for the construction of Sienna because it is on a hillside. It has remained on schedule and so far, footers and foundation are complete in about 60% of the building. Foundations and walls are currently being constructed in the gatehouse section and progress is moving according to schedule. The eastern most section of the residence hall has the first floor walls in place and decking is scheduled for this week. The parking lot for this hall is curbed and base coat of asphalt is in place. Hopefully the dorm will be ready to go by the beginning of next school year.

Sincerely,

Jessica Neiser

Bellarmine students danced the night away at the university's annual Pioneer Dance on November 18 to celebrate the end of Heritage and International Education Week. The dance was held at the Frazier Historical Arms Museuem in downtown Louisville. Students began coming through the doors at nine p.m. and quickly got the dancing started. Some students enjoyed the dance floor while others took time to chat with their friends at the many seating tables the museuem had to offer. The music varied from current hip-hop to 80s music to even a techno song to which a Bellarmine student used his glow sticks to rave on the dance floor. Junior Megan Sarason said it was the best Bellarmine dance she has been to yet. "The d.j. was great and my friends and I just went crazy dancing. My only complaint was that it got so hot out there!" said Sarason. The Pioneer dance is the second dance Bellarmine has had in a month, following the infamous halloween dance, Ball on the Belle, which took place on October 20. Unfortunately, the dancing shoes may have to be out away for awhile, since the next dance will be Bellarmine's Homecoming dance, which will take place on February 9.

Sincerely,
Jessica

'Tis the Season!

The holidays are finally upon us. We have survived another election.

This year the Democrats took over the House and Senate and are vowing to make big changes. Louisville's five-term congresswoman, Anne Northup was one of the Republican causalities. Democratic challenger John Yarmuth defeated her by only two percentage points.

There is no doubt the results sent a big message to President Bush. The event will be held to raise awareness about homelessness in the Louisville area and inform students of some of the causes of homelessness.
The group's goal is to dispel many of the myths about homelessness and to help fellow students learn ways to change the system. The event was last held on Bellarmine's campus in the Fall of 2003. Dr. Brown's diversity class is re-installing the Bellarmine Shantytown tradition this year.
During Shantytown, participating students will get the chance to experience homelessness. These students will spend two nights sleeping in cardboard boxes, attend sessions taught not only by Dr. Renner (as well as an organization called Jobs with Justice,) have the option of participating in a service projects at both Kid’s café and a soup kitchen, and being served meals by several food donors that help the homeless in the Louisville area.

Between service opportunities, sessions, and meals there will be time for small group discussion, where students can discuss amongst themselves about the experiences they encounter during the event.
For students who want to participate; there will be registration form, and a complete schedule for the event, available during free period on November 9th in the Horrigan Hall Campus Center.
Each participant is required to donate or fundraise $10 to participate. The money will be due at the kick off on November 14. Junior Communication major, Kristina White, who is one of the students involved in planning the event, said that the money will be going both towards the funding of Bob Lockhart’s service trip to Guatemala and a Louisville charity dedicated to helping the homeless.
The group will also be accepting donations to split between the charities from everyone who cannot participate.
Sincerely,
Michael Mahlbacher

Homecoming is beginning to surface at Bellarmine as efforts have been made to revolutionize the way the students view Homecoming Week. According to many students, homecoming has in the past been not much to talk about. That is why this year Bellarmine now has a Homecoming Steering Committee, who has been working on homecoming since February of last year.
The Committee has added in new events such as Hoopla, a corn hole tournament, Dunk-a-palooza, and Sing-Song. The Hoopla will be a carnival-like event before the homecoming game on that Saturday. There will be game booths set up, face painting, and a lot of other spirited activities that alumni and their families, faculty, staff, and students can all come together and attend. The corn hole tournament is just an intramural competition where teams will compete with each other to eventually make it to the “final four” where hopefully they will play Dr. McGowan and another high-profile member on campus. There will be final four t-shirts and the winner of the tournament gets to keep the corn hole set. Dunk-a-palooza will be basketballs displayed throughout campus. However, these are not just any basketballs- they have been cut up, molded, re shaped, painted, and just about anything else a group feels necessary to dress it up with spirit. The most creative and spirited ball wins! Sing-Song will take place after the homecoming game and it is a variety show themed “Boogie Knights” due to the fact that homecoming week will be focused around the 1970s era. Groups will have the opportunity to compete with each other through a broad range of 1970’s acts.
According to the committee advisor Lauren Belcher, we should expect to see a big change with homecoming and how the students view it. Currently, homecoming committee is speaking with registered student organizations and other groups in order to get the school interested and signed up to participate in the week’s events.
As of right now, there is not much posted on the website, but more should be soon to come. This past Tuesday October 24th, Heather Snow, who is the Director of Stundent Engagement, arranged for a "Laugh at Lunch" in Frazier Hall- a free lunch and a comedian during the free period. The lunch included grilled burgers, tasty egg rolls, french fries, and lots of soda and water- all for free! As commuters settled down in their seats and began eating, out came the comedian. Students were curious at first, but the laughs quickly spilled out amongst the crowd as the comedian told jokes- anything from politics to the race track to a trip to the movies. This comedian included it all! He also brought to up two of his friends for a joke rap session and rapped a few songs including their hit "I'm the worst rapper alive". As on-campus students enjoyed their lunch in Kosters, they heard the comedian and also began to filter into Frazier to join in on the laughs.

Heather Snow stated that there will be many more efforts to do similar activities including a Halloween activity they have planned on Tuesday, October 31st for the commuters. So they have to sun dry the pottery because they don’t own any other means of cooking the pottery. According to Senior Theology major, Chris Luken, currently the members of the town are using, “a brick square forum with hot cow dung in order to fire their pieces.”
The Masters of Spirituality Program decided they wanted to raise money for a kiln for the town, which the town could use to more efficiently cook their pottery. The program has been collecting donations for the kiln but is a couple hundred dollars short of their $2000 goal for buying the kiln. Such a kiln could cook up to 200 pieces of pottery at one time compared to the less high tech methods the town uses now, were they can only cook a few pieces of pottery as a time. .
The Theology Club decided to step in to try and help raise the rest of the money through a Halloween fast that will be going from October 30th at 6pm until October 31st at 6pm. Students who want to get involved in the fast just need to have family, friends, or professors to sponsor them during their fast for every hour that they are able to abstain from eating. The students involved will be fasting from all food and caffeine, but was however allowed to drink juice and water during the fast. The Theology Club is counting this event as both their annual project as well as their annual fundraiser. Theology Club is an academic based RSO like the Psychology and Philosophy clubs are.
Currently CSA and InterVarsity have joined forces with the Theology club in order to aid them in their fasting event. Luken, who has been helping lead the Theology Club’s efforts for the fast, said that any students, who also want to get involved, are more then welcome to do so. Luken also said,” It’s something that we felt we could help with and that would make a difference to people; does more then a bake sale. Plus it not only helps them, but it is a sacrifice to us and a call to service in stewardship that is more then just writing a check, it’s self-sacrificing for the deems of others.”
In addition to the fast, the Theology club also plans on viewing and holding an open forum discussion on the movie Do Vinci Code when it comes out on video in later weeks. This forum will be mediated by the Theology Club and will have an open discussion on what the movie is, what relevance it has, and how it should be viewed.
Sincerely
Michael Mahlbacher

What is the Guarnaschelli Lecture series?

The Guarnaschelli Lecture Series is dedicated to bringing leaders in the arts and humanities field to the community. Thank you for reading Around Bellarmine!

Last week scientist and author Edward O. Wilson delivered the 2006 Guarnaschelli Lecture.

Wilson spoke about his hope that one day religion and science will unite. Wilson, who has been called "the New Darwin," believes that evolution and creation can co-exist peacefully. Wilson is one of the few prominent scientists who believe there can be a connection between these two ideas.

Wilson also spoke about his love for science in general. This love began when Wilson was a small boy growing up in Alabama. As a young boy, Wilson spent his days exploring the forests, streams and fields near his home. When he was 13, Wilson discovered a colony of ants in a vacant lot. It turns out the colony was the first known colony of fire ants in the U.S.. The ants originated in Argentina and Brazil and were known across the South as “the ants from hell.”

Wilson earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Alabama and his doctorate from Harvard University. He became a professor at Harvard in the 1950s, and remains as a professor emeritus today.

Wilson has published over 20 books about his studies not only about ant societies, but other animal societies as well. Early on is his career, Wilson saw that there were many parallels in interactions in bird, monkey, ape, lion and human societies. He published a book about these parallels in 1975 titled “Sociobiology: The New Synthesis.” In 1983 Wilson published a book called “Promethean Fires” which established a new field of science: sociobiology. He is also known as a modern-day Darwin, because of his research and writings on evolution. However, Wilson is one of the few scientists to believe that creationism and evolutionism can peacefully co-exist.

Wilson’s expertise is not limited to writing, however. Wilson has studied ants and other animal life extensively in Mexico, South America and numerous other countries.

Keep reading to find out more about the Guarnaschelli Lecture Series in general.

Happy weekend!

Ashley

Bellarmine to host first ever GLVC Tournament soccer game

This Sunday, Oct. 22, Bellarmine is hosting the first GLVC tournament game in the school's history.

The women's soccer team won a place in this year's tournament with their stellar playing. Halas was named GLVC Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 18 and led the team in scoring this season. Larkin proved to be a tough defender, allowing only 0.97 goals per game. She also managed to score twice, both game winners. This is the second time O’Brien has been selected for the All-GLVC Second Team. Like Larkin, she also proved to be a tough opponent and scored 2 goals this season, giving her 12 career goals at Bellarmine, making her 7th in team history. Westendorf is the first BU goalkeeper to earn such honors. Roney earned the award by scoring five goals and getting our assists during the Lady Knight’s three-game winning streak last week. Through 15 games this season, Roney compiled a team-leading 10 goals and is second on the team in assists. Last season, Roney was named to the All-American Second Team, also by womensfieldhockeytoday.com.

The women’s soccer team extended their winning-streak to four last Friday when they defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 3-1. The Lady Knights scored early, as Lindsey Scheer scored her seventh goal of the season only five and a half minutes into the game. The Lady Panthers scored a few minutes later, but the goal was their only one of the game, and their only attempt of the half. Freshman Amanda Moore scored the game winning goal unassisted in the 14th minute and Sara Goblirsch scored in the 28th minute to give Bellarmine a 3-1 lead. The Panthers only attempted one goal in the second half, but were unsuccessful.

The men’s soccer team was also successful this week, winning their final game of the season. The Knights defeated the University of Southern Indiana 3-0. Bellarmine’s Ryan Lederman scored his sixth goal of the season in the 29th minute to give the Knights a lead of 1-0. The goal was assisted by Phil Glaser and Derrick Yeagle. It was also the third goal of the weekend for Lederman. Bellarmine would score twice more, one goal coming from Andrew Zarczynski and the other from Ryan Coffey. Unfortunately, the win was not enough to earn the Knights a spot in the GLVC tournament.

And finally, the lacrosse team released their 2007 schedule a couple weeks ago, and the line up is nothing short of impressive. They will open the season on the road against the University of Maryland. Last season the Terrapins were ranked No. 4 in the country and played in their 19th NCAA Final Four. The Knights will open their home games Feb. 24 against St. Johns. During the season, they will also face Notre Dame, Air Force, North Carolina, Princeton and Duke, just to name a few. We here at Around Bellarmine wish the guys on the lacrosse team the best of luck during their upcoming season.

Have a great weekend!

Ashley

Annual Study Abroad Fair

The annual Study Abroad Fair was held by Bellarmine’s Study abroad program on Thursday October 12th.
Between fifteen and twenty Bellarmine students, who had traveled abroad through the program in past years, talked about their experience within the program. According to the director of the study abroad program, Hannah Holler, around two-hundred and fifty students turned out, through out the day, to explore the event. There were several tables set up, each representing some of the countries within the program. Bellarmine has about one-hundred and forty-five partner universities in over forty five counties within its study abroad program.
Holler said that one of the advantages that students who get to study abroad have, is that they are much more marketable in the job market after they graduate. She said that students, who go through the program end up more focused, learn more about other cultures and language, are more confident in their abilities, and see the world from a whole new perspective.
The study abroad program provides classes in other countries year round. Students who study abroad in the fall and spring have the opportunity to complete twelve plus credit hours while they are over seas that semester. Students you study during the winter break, study for two weeks and complete three credit hours during their time there. During the summer students have the option of studying for two weeks, a month, or eight to nine weeks. In that time they will complete between three to nine credit hours during that summer period.
The cost of studying abroad is half the price of normal tuition, plus the air fair to and from the country of study. Scholarships are also widely available for students. Such scholarships are either provided through Bellarmine or are provided by donors for certain fields of study.
Students who plan on studying abroad usually have to register between little over a semester to a year in advance. Information sessions students interested in studying abroad are held by Hannah Holler on Wednesdays at 3:30pm in Miles Hall, room number 232. Students can also log on to the study abroad website at
http://www.bellarmine.edu/international/ for more information.
Sincerely,
Michael Mahlbacher

“Empty Bowls” at Bellarmine

The tenth anniversary Empty Bowls fundraiser was held by at Bellarmine University in Frazier Hall from 5:30-8pm on Wednesday October 11th.
Empty bowls is an event that falls in the middle of the or what is called “the week in the highlands” and is organized by Highland Community Ministries in order to raise money to provide services for those in the community who are in need. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised by the Empty Bowls event during the past ten years of its existence.
At the event, participants who had bought their tickets either for soup or soup with a ceramic bowl, got a dinner made up of a wide variety of soups and other food items such as cheese, bread, and an array of special deserts, which were donated to the event by various food companies in the area. For a higher price, ticket holders had also had the option of receiving a ceramic bowl as a gift with their meal. The bowls were donated to the event by about thirty local ceramic artists. Highland Community Ministries also had a silent auction of donated gift baskets, as well as two live bands that played at the event (Century of Aeroplanes and Highland Middle School Jazz band).
Students from Bellarmine’s Campus Ministry helped with the serving of many of the soups available at the event. Students who helped with the set up and clean up of the event were given a free dinner for their efforts during the event. Sodexho, Avalon, Breadworks, City Café, Kroger, Lynn’s Paradise Café, Bristol Bar &Grill, and Burger’s Market were just a hand full of the companies that were involved in donating food for the event.
Sincerely,
Michael Mahlbacher

Blessing of the Animals

Bellarmine’s annual Blessing of the Animals was hosted Bellarmine’s Catholic Student Association and Campus Ministry on Wednesday October 11th.
The Blessing of the Animals tradition was started in order honor the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. This saint was the first of a line of Franciscan priests, who were the first community of priests to be teachers at Bellarmine University. According to legend, St. Francis nursed a sick wolf back to health and as a result of his gentleness, all of God’s creatures became unafraid of him. St. Francis was also known for being a man of peace.
Dr. Margaret Mahoney, who was the first female professor to teach at Bellarmine, was the first to suggest adopting the event, which already had existed in England, in order to honor this famous saint of Bellarmine. She suggested to President Joseph McGowan that Bellarmine hold an annual event where they would bless animals in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.
Dr. McGowan then passed the idea off to Melanie Prejean Sullivan, head of Bellarmine’s Campus Ministry Office, who first initiated the event in the fall semester of 2002. The event was first held at the Franciscan circle near the statue of St. Francis for a few years, but was moved in more recent years to the quad.
For the first time in the event’s history, the University allowed its entire hourly staff, who wanted to participate in the event, to go home in order to get their animals to bring to the blessing, without having to clock out during their time away. It was also the first year that the event was held in Horrigan Hall, as a result of the weather.
This year the event was lead by Dr. Sinski, Melanie Prejean Sullivan, and Father Troy Overton OSF. Overton was asked to offer the blessing by Sullivan. Animals were sprinkled with holy water during the event and were also given a Franciscan medal and a blessing by Overton. According to Sullivan, the blessing was given to remind us of baptism as well as to include animals in that blessing.
Faculty, staff, and students all brought their animals to be blessed at the event. The animals consisted of several dogs, a cat, and a caterpillar. Sodexho and Campus ministry also catered the event. Sodexho provided cookies in the shape of dogs and dog treats, as well as lemonade and water. Campus Ministry provided the dog biscuits.
Sullivan said that the most unusual animal that they ever had in the past four years was a chameleon, but the usual turn out of animals has been dogs and cats.
Despite the blessing being moved indoors this year, the event was still deemed a complete success.
Sincerely,
Michael Mahlbacher

This past Thursday, October 12th, the Bellarmine Radio RSO group had an interest meeting in BAC 217 in order to discuss the current and future issues involving the radio. Chairperson Emily Carroll introduced herself and the new radio advisor, Dr. Kyle Barnett. During the meeting, the group talked about fundraisers in order to generate enough money to support the radio themselves, without having to ask SGA for any money. They also talked about future trips, such as a radio conference in Last Vegas next semester. The biggest discussion was about leadership postitions. The group is seeking out energetic, outgoing, and responsible to fill positions. Currently, all that is being offered is a one credit hour radio lab, but next semester a sports broadcasting class will be added as a class choice. For more information you can e-mail Carroll at ECarroll01@bellarmine.edu or visit www.buradio.bellarmine.edu. Each organization had a table set up along the Quad walkway in order to draw the passing students into the celebration. The RSO booths offered both refreshments like cake, cotton candy, cupcakes, popcorn, cookies, and chips, as well as activities like a bean bag toss, to the students passing to and from Horrigan Hall after classes. During the event Dr. Margret Mahoney, the first female professor to teach at Bellarmine, cut the cake for the celebration and everyone sang Happy Birthday to Bellarmine.
At the same time, students from the Mass Media and American Politics class set up a booth table to encourage students to register to vote. The group was trying to increase awareness about the extreme amount of voter apathy our country deals with each year at election time. Although the most popular stop for the Birthday event was the bean bag station, the group managed to register close to 50 new voters. The group will be hosting their voter registration table again during Thursday’s Free Period.
, Sincerely
Michael Mahlbacher

This past weekend was quite a spirited one for Bellarmine University with eight games in three days, which is more home games than any other weekend in the entire year. Soccer started the weekend out on Friday against Drury University. Before the game, there was inTENTse fun, which is basically a big tent that houses a lot of food (hotdogs, chips, drinks, etc) that is given to the students at the game. The men's game started at one p.m. and preceded the women's game at 3:30 p.m. The teams started off the weekend successfully with two big wins; 2-1 on the men's side and 1-0 on the women's side. At four p.m., the field hockey team began their streak of home games after a season on the road and took on Catawba College. Led by junior Tumaini Malenga, they won 4-0! The final game of the evening was volleyball's match-up against University of Southern Indiana, where they fell 30-17, 30-27, 25-30, 30-16 in a tight match.
Saturday, volleyball once again played against the #19 ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), who is currently also the GLVC leader. Despite a brilliant effort, Bellarmine barely fell 27-30, 30-23, 30-28, 30-25.
On Sunday, the field hockey team started off the day against Mercyhurst College, losing 4-2. Later the day, it was also the final home games for the men and women's soccer teams. The men began the senior day at noon and lost a close battle 3-1 to Rockhurst University. The women avenged the loss by protecting their home turf in a 3-0 victory. The women's team finished with a perfect 6-0 record at home.
Overall, Bellarmine finished the weekend 4-4, leaving only room to improve!

Sincerely,
Jessica

Looking for a break in the middle of the week to get out and try something new? Well fortunately for you, Bellarmine is jumpin' and jivin' with swing dance classes every Wednesday at nine p.m. in Frazier Hall. The class features two high-energy instructors who are more than willing to work with beginners. In fact, according to sophomore Molly Lamier, the majority of the class is new to the swing dancing scene. The class starts off slow so that the dancers can ease their way in and then the class quickly picks up pace and adds in a variety of different steps and spins. Lamier recommends the class saying, "I think everyone should learn a variety of dance styles, it is a breath a fresh air from the dancing you see at clubs and such. Plus, its a lot of fun!" Lamier did, however, comment that one difficulty with the class was that she pretended to be the male counterpart since there was an average of two girls to every guy. "More men would be a definite plus". If interested in the swing dance classes, feel free to join them at Frazier, be sure to wear casual clothing and flat, comfortable shoes to begin.

Sincerely,

Jessica Neiser

The Flood of 2006

Last weekend over nine inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours leading to widespread flooding. Basements flooded, creeks overflowed, and Bellarmine's own Anniversary Hall became a very large Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Around midnight on Friday Sept. 22 water began flowing into the lobby and down the first floor hallways in Anniversary. First floor residents tried to stop water from flowing into their rooms by stuffing towels under their doors, but to no avail. Some rooms had as much as two or three inches of water. Residents had no choice but to move belongings to higher ground and find a place to sleep for the night. It was reported that people had to wade through water waist-deep just to get into the building.

All that water didn't put a damper on family weekend. Activities managed to go on despite the flood. It was amazingly appropriate that this year's theme had a nautical theme: "Cruise into Family Weekend."

This week Bellarmine students and Louisville residents were cleaning up from the flood. 10 people across the state lost their lives as a result of the high waters, including a man and his one-year-old daughter who died when the truck they were in was swept off I-65 in Hardin County.

Have a safe and fun weekend!

Ashley

With the school year now in full gear and students finally back into the swing of classes, its time for the rest of the family to join in on the fun! Family Weekend will be held this weekend, September 22-24, and will have many exciting events to go along with their theme "Cruising into Family Weekend". Ashley Heck, who is committee co-chair for the inTENTse fun before the volleyball game on Friday, gave me the scoop on the weekend. Friday night will consist of Pirate Bingo at 10 p.m.. The following morning, there will be a Beach Party breakfast preceding the "Amazing Race: Captain's Challenge" contest, which brings in over 150 participants to compete throughout Louisville for prizes. Later, the Legacy Dinner, honoring all Bellarmine "legacy" students (meaning they have family who are alumni), will be held at 5:00 p.m. at the Bellarmine Women's Council Designers' Show House. At 8 p.m., head over to Frazier and enjoy mocktails and "The Best Ship Show Ever", which features faculty and student acts. Next for the night is the dessert reception including a chocolate buffet and in the words of Heck, "Who doesn't love chocolate?". The next morning, things will wind down with mass at 9:00 a.m. and a closing brunch in Cafe Ogle. So be sure to come out and see what Heck promises to be "one of the most fun expereinces at Bellarmine". All of the organization’s representatives were eager to talk to the students and explain what kind of volunteer service they had available and the types of people they were looking for in their program. Some of the bigger and more popular programs included Salvation Army, who even had stockings available that students can fill with little gifts for their Christmas drive; Brooklawn Child and Family Services, who offer a variety of mentoring and tutoring opportunities to mentally and behaviorally troubled boys; Big Brother and Big Sisters; Metro United Parks; ElderServe, which provides many different ways to work with the elderly; Ronald McDonald House; Special Olympics; and many more. Junior Megan Sarason who attended the fair believes that it gives a lot of excellent opportunities that students may not even know about and she also stated that, “the fair gives students new to the school a chance to see what is going on around the area and an easy way to become involved at a place they may feel uncomfortable at.”
If anyone did happen to miss the fair, there are still many ways to still be included. One of the best ways is to go to Campus Ministry where there is a binder full of service opportunities and a list of e-mails/ telephone numbers to contact each place with.

Sincerely,
Jessica Neiser

Sir Trav-a-Lot

This semester, Bellarmine has introduced a new homecoming event called Sir Trav-a-lot.

The event pits 15 teams against each other to see who can come up with the most creative ways/places to photograph a knight statue. A selected cast of between 12-18 Bellarmine student actors will perform the show on October 26-29 in Wyatt Hall’s Black Box Theater at 8pm.
The show is about a German soldier who returns home after the end of World War II to find only death and abandonment. According to the director of the production, Professor Lee Smith, the play is “a scream from the heart, and is the last gasp of German Expressionism.” Being as shocking and timely today as it was written, Smith says, “The Outsider is a mesmerizing look at the horrors of war and the dangers of nationalism.” Lee Smith.
The students who auditioned for the show, participated in several “cold reading” of the script. During the audition, Smith gave each student a chance to improve their readings, by giving them direction between their first and second reading. For some students, like Raymond Burns, it was their first time auditioning for a Bellarmine theater production. Burns said, “This was my first time auditioning for an actual role. I’ve done other stuff for the theater department before, like tech work, but this year I wanted to try my hand at acting. This is my last year, so this is really my last chance to do anything like this.”
When Smith was asked about what he was looking for during the auditioning process Smith said, “Casting depends on a lot of ineffable qualities - feel for the style, feel for the character, chemistry with other actors. Smith says he hopes to continue building on foundations that the students and he have laid over the last two years. Smith also said that he hopes they can add some technical theatre expertise to their acting and directing skills. Smith added, “I hope I'm a good enough director to help these actors shape this into a great work of theatre.”
Sincerely,
Michael Mahlbacher

On Thursday, September 7th, Bellarmine held it's annual involvement fair during free period in the Quad.

The annual event showcases all Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and allows students to get information and join the various organizations. Due to the construction of the lacrosse stadium near the location of last year’s tournament, this year’s tournament was held on 1668 Richmond Rd. In previous years (except for last year) the tournament was held at the volleyball net next to Miles hall. Residence life decided however to try some different locations as of last year. This year’s tournament started at 9am and despite that the weather was overcast; the participants and onlookers of the event were enthusiastic about the event. About six teams of six people showed up to play each other in hopes of taking the field of glory. The winning team was awarded the sum of $400 for their victory, and second place was also awarded a sum of $250.
The volleyball court area at Richmond had been prepared for the participating teams hours before. The resident life staff drenched the court area with water in order to make the court as muddy as possible.
When asked about his experienced at the Mud volleyball tournament Jordan York, a senior philosophy major said, “I've been doing it for four years and while it seemed that attendance was down this year, the court was as nice as ever. It was plagued with rocks and debris the first three years but this year it was just mud… I didn't see it advertised as much around campus as it was the last few years. It was still a blast though.”
A freshman physical therapy major, Simone Potts, also said, “The mud volleyball tournament, being so early in the school year, was a great way to kind of break the ice for some students.”
Sincerely,
Michael Mahlbacher

Dear Reader,

Welcome to Around Campus: Bellarmine University Events!
